Ian graduated from the University of Dundee in 2009 with an Upper Second-Class MA (Hons.) degree in Town & Regional Planning. Ian continued his studies at the Queen’s University Belfast, graduating in December 2010 with an MSc. with Commendation in Spatial Regeneration.
Ian returned to Scotland to begin work in the onshore renewables industry in Aberdeenshire as a Planning & Environmental Consultant with VG Energy. He gained considerable experience in conducting feasibility studies, site appraisals and securing planning permissions for wind farm projects.
He continued his professional career moving to Ryden Property Consultants in 2014, qualifying as a Chartered Member of the RTPI later that year. Ian’s workload comprised all facets of planning including site promotion through the local development plan process based primarily in residential, commercial and retail land uses, managing planning applications and appeals and client representation at oral hearings and committee meetings.
Ian joined John Spain Associates in October 2017 and brings a depth of experience gained working for multi-national clients and national housebuilders on large scale projects.  He is a corporate member of the Irish Planning Institute since 2018.
