Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)
Overview
JSA Planning have acted as planning consultants for several large scale battery energy storage system (BESS) projects across Ireland. BESS projects comprise significant installations of batteries which can store large quantities of electricity during periods when abundant renewable energy is available on the grid, discharging that energy when energy is in short supply and at times of higher greenhouse gas intensity of electricity on the grid. This helps to support the decarbonisation of Ireland’s energy system and the integration of more renewables on the grid.
JSA Planning Role
The scale of BESS projects coordinated by JSA Planning has ranged from smaller scale installations (c. 10MW) to large scale installations with a capacity in excess of 100 MW. We have coordinated successful applications for BESS projects as stand-alone proposals, and as part of integrated renewables and large energy user developments across multiple counties.
Outcome
The BESS projects JSA Planning have secured planning for amount to hundreds of megawatts, supporting the decarbonisation of the Irish electricity grid.
